When Gerhard Rohlffs, a german explorer , crossed the western desert from the east to the west he found this jewel on Christmas Eve in the year 1873.

He described it with these following words:

“The beauty and the enlargement of this cave full of stalagtites opened in front of us. It was more as anybody of us expected. The stalagtites were hanging from the ceiling like white or transparent curtains. We had never seen this before.”

After this the cave was forgotten for 120 years, in 1993 she was explored again.

Now people can go there to visit this beautiful place. It is an unforgettable experience to see this cave with these stalagtites and to remember the time when there was a lot of water in this now dry area. How long ago is this time of water that let the stalagtites grow ( they grow about 8 – 15 mm in 100 years).
A small entrance invites you to come in, than you slip in on sand and at the end opens around you a big hall, a ballroom or whatever you want to see in your fantasy.

Nearby is another cave, only to get in with a rope. Geologists say that this area is full of caves.

East from the cave is one of the biggest dunes, called “Abu Muharik “.
This dune is in movement and therefore also the name “Father of Movement”.
The end of  the dune near the Oasis Kharga is crescent-shaped and moves about six meters a year.
